Jean-Charles de Castelbajac has spent over 40 years curating Les Contemporains – a gallery of artists who inspire him and shape the spirit of their time – which counts the likes of Andy Warhol and Vivienne Westwood among its subjects.

In its latest instalment, photographer Fabien Montique captures creatives who define the present moment at his home studio in Paris, where each embodies an iconic piece from Jean-Charles’s archive.

Sarah Andelman joins Jean-Charles and Fabien in the home studio for this chapter. She enters the box set wearing a signature Jean-Charles piece: the iconic teddy bear coat.

Transcript:

Fabien: So Sarah, we’re now in Jean-Charles’s universe, there’s a lot of colour. What colour describes how you feel today?

Sarah: It’s a rainy day, so it’s not the most rainbow-happy day. [In any case], my colour is blue.

Fabien: What are the last three photos you took on your phone?

Sarah: Oh, I certainly took a picture of my dog, Oreo; what Philip cooked for me this morning – some beautiful biscuits, cookies; and an amazing Sacai x Smythson bag I just received.

Fabien: And Jean Charles’s world, there’s joy and love. What songs have you recently added to your playlist?

Sarah: I’m thinking of this band we just went to see in concert: La Lom, at Le Trabendo. It’s a band from Los Angeles, very South American.

Fabien: Okay. What three words would describe your taste?

Sarah: Joyful, playful, and very personal.

Fabien: What was the last thing that you wore that you felt was daring?

Sarah: This! Look at this amazing coat. I’m so happy to be in it. I don’t want to take it off.

Fabien: Do you remember the first work of art, literature, or music that really stayed with you?

Sarah: I would say the blue from Yves Klein. I was fascinated that a work can be just one intense colour like this.

Fabien: What is the most boring question that you’re always asked – and instead of that question, what would you like to be asked?

Sarah: So, lots of people ask me, “When will you reopen Colette?” Ah no, that won’t happen! And I would love people to ask… not “What’s next?” because I never know what to say for this. But people could ask, “What’s your favourite restaurant at the moment?” It’s always nice to share a good address.

Fabien: How would you determine when an idea is good?

Sarah: When it makes sense. Yes. When it’s so obvious that everybody is aligned.

Fabien: And finally, what is one design – clothing, furniture, object – created since 2000 that will stand the test of time?

Sarah: Let’s say this chair [that Sarah is sitting on]: this Hall Haus x Jean-Charles de Castelbajac chair. Let me show it to you. I think it’s an amazing homage, and I love the colour.

Fabien: Perfect. Thank you Sarah. Thank you so much.
