In “Yes / No Game,” Jake Hall constructs a soft, lunar field of muted celadon, lavender, and chalk-blue an atmosphere that feels suspended somewhere between a child’s drawing, a dream diary, and a philosophical diagram. Across the surface, circular orbits, hangman symbols, repeated “yes/no” markings, and floating humanoid silhouettes create a coded visual grammar that recalls Mir’s constellations and Twombly’s mythic mark-making.

At the centre of the painting, two elongated yellow forms half figures, half beams of light stand like parallel currents. Surrounding them is a faint red ring that behaves a s both halo and enclosure, suggesting cycles, relationships, or the invisible boundaries between people. Scattered across the composition are drifting phrases (“God show me…”, “hurt”, “game”) that appear and vanish like fragments of overheard thoughts. These textual murmurs echo Basquiat’s fragmentary poetics, where writing becomes emotional evidence rather than literal statement.

The composition oscillates between innocence and unease. Asoft red smear part apple, part wound anchors the lower right, injecting a sense of vulnerability into the otherwise airy palette. Hall’s diagrams fold into each other: the hangman scaffold, the orbits, the incomplete words, the existential binary of yes/no. Together they suggest the paradox of adulthood: the negotiation between choice and fate, play and consequence, logic and feeling.

“Yes / No Game” exemplifies Hall’s ability to turn private psychology into universal symbol. The painting reads like a map of decision-making rendered in a language that is part code, part prayer, part childhood memory.
